"When are you speaking to the band?" an inquiry reads. "My request was to ask if I can join as their extra sister."

There is only one problem: The sender also longs to be the Haims' fourth member. And we're in plentiful company. Several famous admirers have openly petitioned for the position.

It's clear something is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their path performing shows at local delicatessens with their family. Today, they are multi-time Grammy hopefuls.

In the tradition of the best bands, they're a tight-knit trio. Their music videos repeatedly depict them striding in harmony down the avenues of Los Angeles. In concert, they jam with such unfettered happiness you inevitably think, "I'd love to be part of that, too."

"How often on tour that young girls told us and said, 'Watching you live, I got a bass'," remarks Alana, the youngest of the trio. "That is the greatest honor. That's an award in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire people to form a group."

"So all gets an invitation to be the honorary part of the family."

Historic Milestone

The trio are speaking from a break, where they're taking a pause after an lengthy tour in promoting their new album, I Quit.

They're right now celebrating the news it's been nominated for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in consideration for the award.

"I tune into the lists every year, so it almost feels like The Truman Show when your name is read out," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I dreaming'?"

The weight of the nomination is deeply felt by the band.

"We truly set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge milestone," adds Alana. "Yet we're just appreciative for the pioneers that inspired us."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The album came out of a time of transition. All three sisters ended up single, and the music captures that strange transitional period where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to move on.

The lyrics detail breakups and goodbyes. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've experienced. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they are becoming.

"I adore description, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a mantra. You have to consciously practice shutting out the noise and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Development of Music

That recent confidence required a fresh approach – more organic and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"The drum sound is such a nuanced thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our biography," quips Alana. "I've said it, our albums cannot begin until we find the perfect drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Humor

The trio's honesty fueled the album's rollout, where the sisters revealed some of their personal tales.

One man broke up with Este over a medical consideration. Alana recalled a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these breakups, you just feel like there's only darkness," explains Alana. "Thus to be able to share those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's so amazing."

An Assured Future

You can clearly sense a change in the band. Today, Haim are more assured of their position in the music world.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an international fan base.

Yet Haim will consistently be their top commitment.

"Me and my siblings have been making music since I was a young child," says Alana. "There is nothing else that we were meant to do. And I'm really grateful we've reached this point and we're still going strong."
